I came across a child named Ocean the other day, a boy, that is just mean. I liked Blaze and seriously considered Spike as a middle name, but had other more normal old fashioned names I wanted to use more.

I wouldn’t choose Mary, although it was the top girl’s name for centures until Linda became #1. Since the practice was to give someone a common name, like Mary, and then to call them a nickname to distinguish them from the dozens of other Mary’s, I don’t think that most Mary’s were actually called Mary, and that is why there are so many nicknames for the common names.

I agree about the made up names, it just sounds trashy!

I don’t agree about old-fashion names. There is nothing wrong with a Mary born in 2010. Who said there was an expiration date??? lol. These names have been around for like 1-2 thousand years for a REASON.

I mean the Blessed Mother was named Mary so that is a VERY old name so why didn’t people, when the year 1010 rolled around, say, "I mean, can you imagine a 1010 baby named Mary??"

I think if something is classy and timeless it can always last.

The names you suggested, "Kayla" was made up at some point too you know, probably pretty recently.

    Hope I helped.

First, I completely disagree with you about "old-fashion" names. Old-fashion names aren’t just coming back suddenly, they’ve been coming back for quite awhile now. Take Emily and Emma for example, both which are old-fashion names, but has pretty much dominiating the girl’s top five popular names. If you take a look at the rest of the most popular names in the US you will see that the old-fashioned Isabella, Ava, Sophia are all on the top ten. Elizabeth is also on the top ten, but it’s considered a classic.

If Emma and Emily can be on the top ten, then why not other lovely old-fashioned names like Mary and Eleanore? (Catherine, by the way is a classic). Celebs are taking the notion and using old-fashion names. There’s Mathilda, Vivienne, and Hazel for example.

I’d much rather see old-fashion names than some of the crap that’s popular right now, like Nevaeh and Kayla. Yuck.

[Edit] Mary was originally a Middle English Anglicized form of the French "Marie," derived from the Latin "Maria," and ultimately from the Hebrew name of uncertain origin "Miryam".

I agree about some of the tackier made-up names, but some of the names that you think are ‘normal’ once were considered old fashioned; names tend to move in cycles. In the next few generations everyone is going to think that Kayla is a "grandma" name and that names we think might sound old (Ethel, Deborah, etc.) will be considered cool and modern.

Your example Kayla is a made-up name in fact, coming from the name Michaela and only getting popular in the last two decades. Same thing with Marissa, which stems from "older" sounding names like Marian and Maris.
